Travels of the Lincoln 1215 Magna Charta
On June 9, 2011 I met with Linda Tilbury, former Visitor Officer at
Lincoln Cathedral and a guide at the Cathedral for over 30 years. Video [view
video-S] On October 25, 2011 I met with Canon Rex Davis, SubDean
of Lincoln Cathedral for 27 years until 2003. Video [view

She explained that the story of the Travels of the Lincoln Magna Carta
actualy began when Dean Fry went to America in the 20's to raise money for
the Lincoln Cathedral repairs which were badly needed. There is a plaque in
the Cathedral expressing gratitude to the people of the United States.
The Lincoln Magna Carta went to the 1939 Worlds Fair in Flushing Meadow.
The location of the exhibit was the Magna Carta Hall within the British
Pavilion. On the way, the Magna Charta spent its first night in the United
States at the alter of St. John's Cathedral made from a stone
from Bury Saint Edmunds before moving on to Flushing Meadow.
After the 1939 World's Fair, the Magna Carta traveled to the Library of
Congress and then onto Fort Knox. Pictures It returned home to England in 1947 under
the bunk of the Captain of the Queen Mary.
1976 - The Magna Carta went to the United States to Standard Chartered
Bank, picked up by John Major who was an officer of the bank.
1986 - The Magna Carta went to The Portland Oregon Historical Society
1987 - The Magna Carta went to the United States for 6 months
